I’ve been listening to the new record by Modest Moust (We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank) for a few months now. I was attracted to the record because the legendary guitarist Johnny Marr from the Smiths had joined the band. I love that record, I do.
But recently, a friend gave me a copy of an 2004 Modest Mouse record, The Moon & Antarctica, and I was blown away. Each song is dark, melodic and real. I’m reminded of the bass lines of Jane’s Addiction, the vocal tones of the Flaming Lips and the storytelling flair of Pink Floyd. This is their best record by far.
Years from now it will probably be my top pick of 2004, even edging out breakthroughs from Bright Eyes or The Arcade Fire.
