You can read emotions in others' faces long before they actually tell you how they feel. And whenever you spot a strong emotion, you're being alerted to a need for empathy. You're also being alerted to avoid insensitivity.

Dr. Paul Ekman, a professor of psychology at the University of California Medical School in San Francisco and the author of Emotions Revealed has studied emotional expressions for fifty years. Not surprisingly, he has found that a high percentage of emotional expression is found in the face.

After conducting studies in dozens of cultures across the globe, Dr. Ekman found that emotions are expressed consistently regardless of locale or custom. Different cultures may use varied auditory and verbal cues, but the facial expression of emotions is universal.
